Spa 4 Hour Classic Phase One Endurance

With a pole position, fastest lap and a class lap record in the bag at the 4 Hour Spa Classic last weekend, Phase One were odds on favourites for the win as night fell over the Belgian circuit.

With two bikes entered into the race, both running on ContiRoadAttack 2 CR classic race tyres, Spa expert Stéphane Mertens and co-rider Ian Simpson put their P&M Suzuki at the front of the grid, with the second pairing of Peter Lindén and Hugh Brasher sitting in 4th. In 2nd place on the grid was Alf’s Endurance, also backed by Continental Motorcycle UK.

Mertens and Simpson led the race for the first 3 hours, and for the first 2 hours, Linden and Brasher tailed them in 2nd – with challenges coming from championship leader’s Team Force, and the Continental backed Alf’s Endurance team of Mike Edwards, Bob Collins and John Barton. During this time, Linden set a new lap and class lap record with a 2 min 39.982secs around the Spa circuit.

Linden and Brasher dropped back to 3rd place before the lead P&M Suzuki came into the pits, with less than an hour remaining, with an engine failure. Team Force were also out, after an engine failure also put pay to their challenge for the win, whilst Alf’s ran out of fuel.

The race was eventually won by the German Kaiser Nico Bakker Kawasaki Team, also running Continentalwho recorded their 2nd win at this event. Linden and Brasher came in 2nd place, mounting a late challenge in the final 30 minutes to try and eat into Kaiser’s 18 second lead. The Motobel team took 3rd place, whilst the popular Roadrunner Suzuki team of of Dirk Brand and  Henk van der Mark took a well earned 4th place – which puts them into the lead in the championship with the final round at Aragon still to come. The top 4 finishers all ran on the ContiRoadAttack 2 CR.

The European Classic Series will come to a conclusion later this year in October, and with a number of high profile retirements at Spa, including Phase One, it promises to be an exciting final race of the season!
