In the 27th May edition of Motorcycle News, the team have been conducting the ultimate adventure motorcycle test, to see which bike, out of a total of 12 leading adventure machines, comes out on top.
Looking for the best possible place to put them through their paces both on and off-road, they headed to our own back garden, the Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales. Not only is it home to the sweeping curves of the A44 mountain road from Aberystwyth to Llangurig, it also houses the 67,000 acre Sweet Lamb Rally Complex, which they all had at their disposal for five days.
Taking part in the test were the following:
- Honda CRF250L
- CCM GP450 Adventure
- Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT
- BMW F800GS Adventure TE
- BMW R1200GS Adventure TE
- Yamaha XT1200ZE Super Tenere
- Triumph Tiger Explorer XC
- Triumph Tiger 800 XCx
- KTM 690 Enduro R
- KTM 1190 Adventure R
- KTM 1290 Super Adventure
To ensure that the off-road element of the test was as fair as possible, MCN selected the Continental TKC 80 as their control tyre commenting:
“The Contis are the choice of adventure riders around the globe due to their ability to handle both on and off-road riding.
Positioned with a 80/20% off-road/on-road split, they are also available in a wide range of sizes, tubed and tubeless, meaning they could be fitted to all our bikes, including those with 21in fronts and 18in rears. On the road they initially felt ‘loose’ especially on the big, powerful 1200s due to the movement you get from the big block tread design. But once you have re calibrated your brain they are surprisingly capable – wet or dry. Off-road they deliver good grip on hard-packed surfaces and are only limited by deep mud. They are great all round tyres and represent the best road/off-road combination currently available.”
Described as the KTM “690 on steroids”, the big KTM 1190 Adventure R topped the test, scoring 25 out of a possible 30. It’s off-road performance made it the clear winner, with it’s big brother, the 1290 Super Adventure coming in 2nd scoring 24 points. Just behind them were the 1200GS and 800XCx, tied for 3rd place.
