Yamaha Pro-AM 2016

After the huge success of last year’s inaugural Pro-AM revival race at Silverstone, we’re pleased to announce that it will be back once again this year as the official MotoGP support race in less than two weeks time.

Last year’s race saw Niall MacKenzie claim victory on a rather damp circuit, and as one of the spearheads behind the series along with Continental dealer IDP Moto, Niall will be back once again hoping to claim further 2-stroke glory.

The original single make Pro-AM series produced some exciting elbow to elbow racing, with all riders using Yamaha’s RD350LC, and many going on to have successful racing careers further down the line.

When the idea of bringing the series back was first proposed, it was decided that it wasn’t feasible to restore the required number of RD230LC machines due to both cost and availability. With that in mind, Daryll of IDP Moto painstakingly restored more than twenty RD250LC bikes, which will once again be fitted with our ContiClassicAttack radial rubber.

  • #54 Niall Mackenzie
  • #60 Donnie McLeod
  • #66 Charlie Corner
  • #77 Andy Muggleton
  • #93 Martin Rice
  • Peter Boast
  • Dave Crampton

Niall has to be the hot favourite for the win again this year as the flag falls as 5pm on the Saturday afternoon, and he’s got plenty of experience on the ContiClassicAttack tyres which he also uses on his RD400 restoration build. However, with plenty of other quality names including Donnie McLeod, Woolsey Coulter and Derek Crutchlow on the grid he won’t have it all his own way!

After his win last weekend in Brno, could we even see two Crutchlows on the podium in a single weekend?

“It’s looking like the ultimate school reunion again!” said Mackenzie. “And we’ve got the 1980s theme once more, after Adam Ant last year we’ve got Rick Astley performing this year!”

One thing’s for sure – we’re going to be filling the air with the sweet smell of 2-stroke!
