Ahead of his recent No Limits race meeting at Silverstone, Fast Bikes regular ‘Dangerous’ Brod Wilson decided to give some new race rubber a try.
We know just how hard it can be to make that switch – for many, you go with what you know – but with a growing reputation for their excellent all-round performance and value for money along with plenty of wins under their belts including the overall victory at Pikes Peak in 2016, more and more riders are trying our latest Continental race tyres.
For Brod it wasn’t necessarily the ideal time to swap – he was already in unfamiliar territory running on the International circuit, which he’d ridden just once before and that was quite some time ago. He also turned up too late to make the initial practice – but undeterred he headed out for qualifying with the new rubber on his Kawasaki ZX-6R.
In the September edition of Fast Bikes Brod says:
“To make things interesting, we’d also decided to give some Continental tyres a try at the meeting. A few of my mates have been racing on them and really rate them, so we opted to run both ContiTrack Slicks and the treaded version in the Cup. Why the hell not!
They took a bit of getting used to, plus some tweaking to alter the ride height of the bike, but after a few sessions I was bettering the times I was doing on the Pirellis.”
Straight line performance was proving a problem for the Kawasaki, but Brod says “right from the word go grip levels were tricky for everyone, but my Conti slicks were on top form and making up for my Kwak’s asthmatic performance in the straights.”
He’s also been flying around Cadwell Park since then, and we can’t wait to see how he’s been getting on with the tyres in the near future!
