With a raft of safety changes and improvements undertaken over the winter break, Oulton Park, a firm favourite with racers and spectators alike, played host to the second Wirral 100 Club meeting of the year this weekend.
Conditions on the Saturday cold and breezy with the sun occasionally breaking through the clouds, but thankfully the rain stayed away from the Cheshire circuit.
Back on slicks for the first time in six years and competing in the 100 – 500cc Allcomers class, Chris Moore of Continental dealer MW Motorcycles in Hyde arrived at Oulton still searching for that elusive first win.
Riding his immaculate Yamaha TZ250, Chris very quickly found a good working setup with the new ContiTrack Slick tyres which he reports were “feeling great from the off.”
Unsure of how quickly they’d warm up in the cool conditions Chris started out at a steady pace, but this setup work quickly translated being able to push hard in order to take his first ever pole position at Oulton as he recorded a 1:55.007 lap, a second and a half quicker than Lee Hodge on his 499 Seeley in second.
With some track time now under his belt and starting from the front of the grid, Chris’s confidence was on the up. The first race saw him have some close battles with John Price and Adrian Kershaw as they tried in vain to take the lead, but Chris crossed the line more than 0.7 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, putting in a best time of 1:52.729 around Oulton on the final lap.
The second race saw Price and Kershaw get the better of Chris on their Kawasaki 400’s, although there was less than 0.25 seconds between the top three at Chris fought hard to take a well earned 3rd place.
The meeting proved to be ideal preparation for his next race at Darley Moor, before building up to the big one at the Pre-TT Classic on the Isle of Man.
Congratulations to Chris on the fantastic results, and we look forward to seeing him in action later on in the year!
